Quarter 2: April 1, 2021 – June 30, 2021

PA Health and Environment Studies: Study 1 (Childhood cancer case-control study)

Recently Completed

  • During our second quarter of this contract, the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health received approval from PA DOH regarding the research methodology—how the data will be collected and analyzed—for the childhood cancer case control investigation (approval date: June 17th, 2021.)
  • We continue to obtain additional information on sources of environmental and geospatial data that can be linked to residential location. These data will help better characterize potential sources of human exposure, including unconventional natural gas development activities and other types of industrial and agricultural operations.
  • We have assembled an external advisory board of community members and stakeholders; the board will meet quarterly.

In Progress

  • We are awaiting the transfer of protected health information data for childhood cancer cases and cancer-free controls.
  • We will begin enrollment in the childhood cancer case-control study and participant interviews in the next quarter.

PA Health and Environment Studies: Study 2 (Asthma and birth cohort studies)

Recently Completed

  • During the second quarter of this contract, the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health research team received all necessary institutional approvals to acquire both the birth outcome and asthma study data.
  • We have assembled an external advisory board and are scheduling the first meeting.

In Progress

  • We are combining environmental, exposure, and census data so we can link it to residential location. This information will be used to evaluate potential residential-level exposures potentially related to unconventional natural gas activities and other industries in the eight-county study area (Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland Counties).
